Alienation Design

One Million Days in China was a unique exhibition that introduced, explored and celebrated 4000 years of Chinese history and culture through Sir William Burrell's world-class collection of Chinese art. Glasgow Museum's required an on-line exhibition to compliment the show at The Burrell Collection in Glasgow and to assist the local, national and international PR campaign.

The main objective of the web site was to provide information on workshops, lectures, video presentations and tours - and give site users travel and location information. Links to other organisations which were relevant to Chinese culture both here and throughout the world and interaction between web site visitors and the Burrell were some other important requirements.

Site visitors were able to pick their favourite object and vote for it as the 'object of the week'. Along with viewing the exhibits online, visitors could also download high resolution images and purchase items relating to the exhibition.

The exhibition has now ended and has been widely seen as a fantastic success. In total 197,000 people visited the exhibition, with over 41,000 of these in the first month alone - making it the most popular free entry exhibition at The Burrell ever.

The website has played a large part in the UK marketing of the exhibition, but came into its own through creating interest internationally. Since launch, the site consistently received over a quarter of a million hits per month - a large percentage from outside the UK.

The exhibition has been integral in creating a wider appreciation of the brilliance of Chinese Culture, in part through the solution provided by Alienation Design.
